Best Portuguese egg tarts in the Bay Area for a reasonable price. Wonderful crust and excellent taste. Service was very prompt, and I was 3rd in line.

Mr. Bread is your classic Chinese bakery. It is a small shop that's take out only and cash only. The prices here are cheap and the breads are so good! As soon as you walk in, you just smell pastries being baked. I showed up before 9 am on a Monday to make sure there was easy to find street parking for free. I would definitely come back! I got the following: * Egg Tart and Portuguese Tart - Great and they were not too sweet! * Pineapple Bun - I meant to order the custard filled one but I think they didn't hear that. * Cinnamon Stick - It was very flaky and with the right amount of sweet, sugary cinnamon. * Corn Bun - Sweet, soft bread, good amount of corn!

My favorite spot for Portuguese egg tarts. I always feel like I hit the jackpot whenever I happen to be here when they come fresh out of the oven. The gooey warm custard just makes it so much better and I never have any regrets even if I burn my mouth a little. Plus they are still excellent even if they are at room temperature. This bakery gets busy so it's always nice knowing the bread/pastries are fresh as they are constantly baking them throughout the day. Also love getting their curry buns and pineapple buns here. Remember - cash only and always order an extra 1-2 more than you think you can eat.

Mr Bread on Taravel - A Must-Visit for Bread Lovers! If you're a fan of delicious baked goods, Mr Bread on Taravel in San Francisco is a must-visit spot. We went there on a Saturday morning around 9:45 am, and despite the 30-minute wait in line, it was absolutely worth it. The variety of breads they offer is impressive. We opted for the baked Portuguese tart and the red bean pineapple bun. Holy moly, both were out of this world! The tart was perfectly creamy with a flaky crust, and the bun had just the right balance of sweetness and texture. The restaurant is small, so only takeout is available, but that didn't detract from the experience. Despite the wait, the staff was efficient and friendly, managing the crowd well. If you're in the area, don't miss out on this gem. The quality and taste of their baked goods are unparalleled. Highly recommend!

After several friends have recommended that I try Mr. Bread for its egg tarts and BBQ pork buns, I've had it on my to-try list. Since I'm rarely in the southern part of the Sunset District, I haven't had a chance to try until this past weekend. I was there on Saturday at 3:30 and found parking almost in front. With no line of customers and given the time of day, I had a fear that things would be sold out. The display cases have pastries, muffins, tarts, cookies, cakes and eggs tarts. On the menu board, they list all the buns they sell, sweet on the left and savory on the right. I ordered egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts and BBQ pork buns. Picked up some pineapple custard buns for a relative. Couldn't get the wheat buns for them as they were sold out. About 15 minutes later, I tried the egg and Portuguese egg tarts. They were still warm. The crust to a good egg tart is having a golden and flaky crust and these hit the mark. The filling were smooth, eggy and creamy. The egg tart was a little less sweet than the Portuguese tart, which probably has more sugar to allow for the browning of the custard tart. But they both were not overly sweet. The Portuguese tarts are $2.60 and the egg tarts are $2.30. Are the infamous ones in Chinatown at $3.75 60% better? Ah, no. The BBQ pork bun had good amount of filing. It had more of a savory taste and didn't have the bbq pork sweetness flavor, which I prefer. I'm glad I finally made it here and enjoyed the delicious egg tarts. If in the area, I'll be stopping by again.

Some of the best egg tarts I've had! The filling to pastry ratio is just how I like it... LOTS of filling with a thin and flakey pastry. It's a cute little bakery with other options too, would love to try more things

Office potluck and I was asked to bring in a dessert. Picked up coconut, egg, and Portuguese tarts from Mr. Bread. Picked them up at about 7:30am, and they were still warm. No line when I first arrived, but line was there as I was leaving. Never had the coconut tart before - full of coconut. My fave is still the Portuguese and egg tarts. $2.30 for egg or coconut. $2.60 for the Portuguese tart.

Mr. Bread is popular for their portugese tarts for good reason - flaky tart shell, perfectly (but not overly) sweet egg custard, and always fresh out the oven. The Macau-style portugese tarts here are a bit wider in size than what I've tried in Europe and they don't caramelize as much of each tart, but every bite keeps its toasty flavor and crisp. When eaten right away, it's a perfect little bite of heaven in a $2.50 tart. Feasting on your tart as soon as you come out the bakery is ideal, but note that the bakery itself does not have seating and is overall a narrow store. With that said - the tart also heats up great in a toaster oven or air fryer. Beyond portugese tarts, Mr. Bread also offers the standard fare of fresh Chinese-style bread baked daily and made-to-order cakes. They only accept cash as a mom & pop bakery, and can take larger phone orders in advance. Would recommend those eyeing portugese tarts to come 1-2hrs before close time, since they do sell out by weekend late afternoons.

Revalidated that the Portuguese egg tarts are bomb (crispiness of the crust is amazing). Everything else unfortunately is subpar. Coconut studdle is very dry imo.
